My last day at the Tribune is this Wednesday, and I'll be moving at the end of next week. This was an unexpected development in my life. They saw my resume online and came to me. I felt pretty tortured about it for a few weeks, but a couple of my good friends encouraged me to continue with the interview process. It really is a great opportunity in a bigger city. Wichita has a population of 350,000 people and the YMCAs there are phenomenal. Time to get back in shape!
I'm sad to leave my friends and church, but I'm excited to be closer to my adorable niece and my best friend. I'm also glad that I won't have to fly home at Christmas time now. I'll just have to drive a couple hours. Oh, and there should be less snow than here. Wahoo!

Prayer request

If you haven't seen it on the news already, an 18-year-old girl, Kelsey Smith, was abducted from an Overland Park, KS Target parking lot Saturday evening. She was one of my brother-in-law's band students. Surveillance video shows her being pushed into her car, and another video shows someone dropping off her car in a Macy's parking lot a couple hours later. The police have a person of interest who might have information, but so far they haven't found him. Please pray for her safety and for wisdom for the police. This happened in broad daylight! I think I shopped at that Target when I was visiting my sister, so it's just really creepy to me.

Saturday, May 12, 2007

Okay, I'm getting too lazy to post here and at blogspot. Thankfully, none of my family and friends live close to the area. I do have one friend in Wichita, about an hour and a half away. She had just driven through Greensburg this past Friday, and now it's gone. I keep checking out the Wichita Eagle for more pictures and stories. It's total devastation. Tornadoes are such freaks of nature. They can totally demolish a house, but leave a Bible on a table untouched. I read a story today saying a rescue worker found three clocks, all stopped at 9:50 p.m., when the tornado went through town. It's just so eerie.

My siblings and I spent so much time in our basement during the summer. Mom would order us downstairs at the slightest threat of a tornado. We always took the lime green booster seat and pillows down to the storm cellar. We'd listen to the radio or read books. Occasionally, we would go up to check the status only to have mom shew us back downstairs. Maybe she just wanted to get rid of us for a while. We learned that tornado watches aren't that big of a deal. We learned how to spot wall clouds, which could lead to a tornado. And we learned that if the temperature suddenly changes, the birds stop chirping, the sky turns green and it's raining sideways...quickly run to the basement! To this day, those signs scare me. I hope the people of Greensburg can move beyond their fear and rebuild.

Wednesday, May 09, 2007

So unless you're living in oblivion, you've heard about the EF-5 tornado that wiped out Greensburg, KS. I think it is so hilarious. You should check it out.

http://www.npr.org/templates/rundowns/rundown.php?prgId=35

I also listened to this little bit. I almost went to Fort Hays State, but thought it was too small and literally in the middle of nowhere. The four-hour drive home would have been terribly boring.

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=10022969

Tuesday, May 01, 2007

I had today off from work since I'm working Saturday. That meant I got to watch Dancing With the Stars! I know...some of you are saying, ughhh...another reality show! Well I've always liked dancing, so it's quite fun to watch. It's been such a long time since I've boogied on the dance floor. I don't think dancing around my apartment by myself counts. I've found that most (I didn't say all) guys don't like to dance. I don't know if it's because they're embarrassed by their lack of rhythm, or if they just think it's dumb. Of course, I remember some guys from my salsa dancing days who thought they were good and they were WAY wrong. I'll always remember Rico Suave (that's what my friend and I called him) who walked around in his unbuttoned silk shirt sipping on a brandy. Every week he would say (insert Latin accent) "You are such a good dancer. Where did you learn to dance like that?" It never failed. He said the same thing every week. I really didn't want to dance with him, but it's considered rude to say no. At Christmas time, he just happened to be on my plane out of South Bend. What are the odds? Thankfully, he must have forgotten me. I wanted to hide! I must say though, Latin men can really flatter a girl. It's a nice boost to the ol' confidence.

Thursday, April 26, 2007

Hey guys, I have a prayer request. My best friend's pastor's wife, Lisa, has found out her breast cancer has returned. She had a mastectomy, chemo and radiation in the past, and they thought the cancer was gone. I only know Lisa a little bit, but I can tell you that she's a fun-loving, strong and faithful woman. Please pray for the doctor's wisdom and strength for her family. Also, please pray for my best friend. She is close to Lisa, and this news is hard for her.

Thank you so very much!

Thursday, April 19, 2007

My question for the day:
Do you think NBC made the right choice in airing excerpts of the Virginia Tech shooter's videos?

Wednesday, April 18, 2007

I need to do Spring cleaning. I say I'm going to do it every year, but I don't. The other day at work, we were having a discussion about the joys of moving. Since I was 18, I have moved to a new residence every two years. For now, I don't plan on moving out of my place until I get a new job somewhere else, or I buy a house, neither of which are in my near future (unless God has a plan He hasn't let me know about). Every time I move, I usually throw things away or take a load to Goodwill. It gets to the point where I just get tired of packing things. Then, there is always the case where I don't unpack everything. I still have a small box with pictures and a couple books just sitting in my living room. The other day, I couldn't find a book, which I knew I owned. I wondered if I had lent it to someone and never got it back. Nope, come to find out it was in a box with some other items that I apparently didn't have room to put out. Guess it's time to downsize again.
